Target Heart Rate

Target Heart Rates are easy to find
using this simple 10-second color coded chart.

The numbers next to your age group represent your heart rate zones while exercising. How do you know which category you fall under?

If you are a beginner to exercise, your target heart rate zone while exercising should be somewhere around the green column.

If you are an intermediate exerciser, you will want to reach the yellow column.

Have you been working out for some time? Ok, then reach for blue!

It is important to note that if you take blood pressure medication, this chart will not provide accurate target heart rate information. Please consult with a physician for more information.

Target Heart Rate Myths Solved!

Myth #1
The harder I exercise, the better results I will have. FALSE

You want to workout at the appropriate zone for your fitness level. If your heart rate is in the red or below column, you can put some more oomph into it. However, if your heart rate is in the gray column or above, slow down a bit, Sparky!

It is a wide spread fitness myth that the harder you train, the better your results will be. Training in your level is the smart thing to do.

Overall, you want to train somewhere between 60-75% of your target heart rate maximum. The table above makes it a snap to figure out those numbers. Just remember to stay in your color.

Myth #2
I have to count my heart beat for an entire minute. FALSE

People count their heart beats many different ways. I have found the best is a 10 second count. The chart above provides numbers on this counting method.

To get your heart rate per minute, simply take your 10 second count and multiply it by 6.

Myth #3
Some people don't have a heart beat! FALSE

If they didn't have a heart beat, they'd be in trouble! We all have heart beats. Some people find it's rather difficult to find theirs.

The above chart shows 4 different places to take your count. I always find the easiest way to find your heart beat is to take your middle and pointer fingers, tilt your head back completely, and place fingers on the side of the neck.

Tilting the head back all the way will stretch the skin a bit and allow your fingers to feel the correct pulse count. Go on and try it :)

MY BEST ADVICE...

Invest in a heart rate monitor. These things are great! It automatically measures your heart rate for you. You'll always be in your target heart rate zone. No counting necessary!
