Strength Training Yoga and Osteoporosis

While yoga might seem like the latest rage and something that will soon go out of style, the connection between strength training yoga and osteoporosis is something that is gaining momentum in the scientific and fitness community.

Many people don’t think that yoga can be considered something that strengthens the muscles, but in reality, it might be the perfect alternative to the weight room.

What’s the fuss about bone strength?

The density of your bones is what keeps them from breaking in half with any impact. As we age, the density of our bones diminishes, more so in women than men. While there is some bone loss that can not be stopped, there are ways to prevent the process from turning into more major concerns. Hence, the study of strength training yoga and osteoporosis began.

Strength training yoga, and osteoporosis are linked in the way that the first two can prevent the third. Both strength training and yoga help to increase the support of the bones, helping to prevent bone loss as well as increase the overall support in the body. Time and time again studies have shown that women who perform some type of weight bearing exercise are at a much lower risk of developing osteoporosis than those that do not.

But how much do you have to do?

To fully link strength training yoga, and osteoporosis prevention, a regular schedule of exercise needs to be constructed. Most experts will recommend that weight bearing exercises like weights and yoga can be done on a regular basis, though weigh training the same body parts should be spaced out about forty-eight hours apart (to allow the muscles to repair and build).

Doesn’t diet have something to do with it?

Of course, getting enough healthy foods in your diet can help with a regimen of strength training yoga, and osteoporosis prevention, but it really is just one part of the puzzle. By adding the exercise portion as well, you create a balanced system of prevention in your body.

Strength training yoga, and osteoporosis prevention shouldn’t be overlooked as the society begins to age. And if you don’t want to lift a weight, head to a local yoga training class where you can stretch and lift your way to stronger bones.
