Strength Training After Fifty

Strength training after fifty years of age really is becoming trendy. Trendy in a good way. Long gone are the days when exercising was purely for attracting your sweet heart. More than likely, seniors are looking to strength train for a healthy heart.

Why do I feel there is a need for an article all about strength training after 50? I mean what exactly is the difference between strength training after fifty years and strength training after 25 years?

Many Things!

Typically people smart enough to begin strength training after fifty years have different goals than everyone else. Take a look at some responses I got from a survey I took of my clients...

Those Strength Training Before Fifty

* Lose 10 pounds before sister's wedding

* Drop extra weight put on during pregnancy

* Become faster for lacrosse season

* Want to feel better about my appearance

Those Strength Training After Fifty

* Need to get more balance

* Doctor asked me to reduce blood pressure

* Decrease arthritis symptoms

* To fight off osteoporosis

* To get rid of stiff feeling in my body

* Because my doctor keeps telling me to get active!

As you can see, those strength training after fifty years of age tend to have very different goals than others. Is fifty a magic number? Not really. It just tends to be the line that separates most goal types.

What else is different?

The types of exercises that older adults do will be dramatically different than others. I would never ask an older adult to do an explosive lunge, or a rigorous cardio program. Instead we would work together to create a safe program that reaches each and every goal that person has set for themselves.

Strength training after fifty years of age is a wonderful idea. I recommend it to everyone. In fact, doctors are beginning to write prescriptions to workout! These doctors are writing, "Get a personal trainer and workout three days a week" on a prescription pad. Can you believe it? The irony here is people are actually doing it this time.

Strength Training After Fifty And Exercising Is The Answer To So Many Of Our Problems!

How do I start strength training after fifty?

Good question. First talk with you doctor about your health and your goals. I'm serious; talk with your doctor. No one is better qualified to assess your current health than you and your physician.

Second, find a trainer that knows her/his stuff. Trainers are all over the place these days. Talk about another trend ;)

It is so important to find someone you feel comfortable with, someone who understands your goals, limitations, restrictions and needs, someone who is experienced in dealing with seniors and strength training after fifty years of age, and find someone that is going work WITH you.

Third, actually do it! This is probably the hardest part, but with the right trainer and proper program you should be eager to get going. You should know exactly where you are, where you want to go, and how you are going to get there.

Fourth, enjoy the ride and all of the benefits you are about to receive :)
