Drinking Water Can Help You Lose Weight

If you’re having trouble getting over the hump when it comes to shedding pounds, there’s a secret ingredient to add to your weight loss mix. No, it’s not diet pills or a chalky shake! The trick can actually be found right in your tap.

According to recent research, that old “wives’ tale” about water and weight loss is actually quite true. A study involving two different groups of overweight men and women showed that water drinkers do really lose more weight. Both study groups were asked to adhere to a low-calorie diet, but only one group was instructed to drink two cups of water before each meal. At the end of a 12-week period, the water drinkers lost an average of about 15.5 pounds. The non-water drinkers only shed about 11 pounds.

So, what it is about water that helps with weight loss so much? If you think about it, drinking water before meals really does make a lot of sense. As little as two cups of water can help you:

  • Feel fuller – Drinking two cups of water before each meal is a great way to start off the eating process because it will help you feel fuller without adding calories to the mix. Water will begin to fill up the stomach, before the food even hits it. This, in turn, can lessen the amount of food consumed before the body feels sated.
  • Begin the digestion process – Water can also kick-start the digestion process and get your metabolism kicked into gear. When this happens, you can benefit from your body potentially burning more calories faster.
  • Stay hydrated – Adding two cups of water into the mix before each meal is also a great way to ensure the body stays hydrated. This can help you out with weight loss to an extent. It’s also incredibly important for overall health.

Why Water?

While you could technically drink up two cups of other liquids to get the same filling effect, there are potential downsides of doing so. Filling up on soda, for example, will likely add calories to your meal and defeat the purpose. Sugary drinks should simply be avoided when you’re trying to shed pounds.

Is it bad to drink water with your meal? I heard lots of different stories…

    • Lynn

      Hi, Leanne.

Honestly I do not know :) I’ve also heard mixed opinions on this and haven’t read a definitive study that proves it one way or another. I generally drink a small amount while actually eating.

    Hi Leanne,

I wouldn’t go this far and say it’s totally “bad” to drink water while eating. But during my medical studies I heard that it’s better for your stomach to only focus on the solid foods at once and have your drinks afterwards. It makes sense though, because by having water you dilute the muriatic acid your stomach produces and needs to digest the food. It cannot work as efficiently anymore and split all the large pieces. Only solid foods induce your stomachs muriatic acid production. For liquids it does not produce gastric acid. They just flow by or pass by your stomach and go right through to your intestinal tract. This has something to do with our human evolution. Our stomach is not used to digest fluids because it learned for over thousands of years that fluids don’t deliver energy, so it figured it does not need to break them down into smaller molecules so that our intestinal can absorb them. That is the reason why many people drinking a lot of sodas and sweet drinks, like e.g. coke (especially while eating and having meals) are often overweight or out of shape. The energy in those drinks goes right through your intestinal wall and can easily be stored in your fat cells. Our bodies simply don’t know that drinks can deliver energy, so have calories which in the end make you fat if you don’t burn them.

Hope that helped. All the Best

This is such an important aspect of weight loss. I also find it amazing how many people just neglect to do this while trying to lose weight. When I am trying to shed fat, this is one of the main things I focus on. Plus I will definitely be trying your smoothie recipes! :)

      Hi Piya.

I drink about 60 oz per day. There are lots of numbers thrown out there, but 60oz works well for me. There are days I drink about 72oz (when I workout and/or when I have a cup of hot tea).
