Creating a cheap home gym beats a gym membership any day! For most of us at least. And when I say cheap, I mean low cost. Not poor quality :)
Building a home gym does not have to require hours of research and thousands of dollars. In fact, it can be quite painless if you know a few tricks and techniques.
I work out regularly. I have full access to three gyms (I'm a personal trainer), but I choose to work out at home. I choose to workout at home for several personal reasons.
1) I find that I am easily distracted while working out with lots of other people.
2) I really hate to think about all the germs floating around. **Shivers at the thought of it**
3) I waste more money at the gym. I buy water or healthy snacks or the gym's tshirts.
4) I don't like to wait in line for a popular piece of equipment. I prefer to get in and get out as fast as possible.
5) I really don't like picking out nifty workout outfits!
So I avoided all of the above dislikes and created my own cheap home gym. There's something about working out in my house, in comfy clothes, with my music, with my simple equipment that saves me loads of time and loads of my hard earned cash. It's just better for me.
The idea for this report came to me one day when a client expressed her concern about going to the gym. She desperately wanted to get fit, but the gym was not her scene.
We started talking about ways to build a cheap home gym. I mentioned what I use at home and had a big "A-HA!" moment. I never realized that most people assume I had a large personal training studio with the latest and greatest home gym set-up.
Quite the contrary! My cheap home gym cost way less than two years at a fitness center. Here are some products I use every single day to keep my body healthy. I recommend them to you as well. After all, if a personal trainer uses it... **wink wink**
1) Stability Ball- These little guys are wonderful. They are the most recommended fitness product on my site. I truly believe everyone should have an exercise ball. Not only can you use the ball for an awesome ab workout, but you can use it for your entire body.
If you are between 5'3" and 6'0" use a 65cm ball. If you are under 5'3" use a 55cm ball. And if you are over 6'0" go with a 75cm ball.
Here's one cautionary note- Do not purchase a stability ball from any old department or sporting good store. You want a high quality burst resistant ball that will support your body weight. We want a cheap home gym, not poor quality equipment!
2) Adjustable Bench- This is a definite buy. Buying one adjustable weight bench will save you loads of cash. The weight bench must be able to go into a decline, incline and flat position. Every cheap home gym uses an adjustable weight bench.
3) Free Weights- Free weights are awesome! I do all of my exercises with free weights. I find I have better control over my form. Besides, these adjustable dumbbells take up a lot less space in my house.
You can buy nifty adjustable free weights or you can look into buying single free weights. If you purchase single free weights, you will more than likely have to keep buying heavier and heavier weights as you increase in strength. I save money by using the adjustable set.
4) Heart Rate Monitor- This is essential! We need to know how fast our heart is pumping to receive the most benefit out of our program! While this may not seem like a must-have piece to your cheap home gym, it will greatly enhance your over all experience.
A heart rate monitor is not the place to skimp on quality. You will want the best you can afford.
5) Home Gym- If you can afford a home gym, by all means go for it. It still saves you loads of money in the long run. Free weights and machines are both useful. A machine takes up a bit more space, but overall it is a great addition to your cheap home gym.
Cardio) Treadmill- One of the last pieces of the cheap home gym equipment is not so cheap. It is the treadmill. I included it in this report because having a great cardio program is equal to having a great strength training routine.
I don't mind if you use ellipticals or stair steppers, but the majority of us prefer a treadmill. They are simple to use and very versatile.
I enjoy being able to jog or run in my own house, but I also like the idea of walking on a steep incline. That works my derriere and gets my heart rate pumping!
As I mentioned with the above products, get the best equipment you can afford. Skimping on quality to save a few bucks is not recommended. To create you own cheap home gym you simply need a few pieces of equipment and that's it. You're set to go.
Let's break this all down and talk about money. If you purchase everything I recommended above, you will have spent about $1580. And that's going with a mix of medium and high price ranges. So you could actually get everything above for less!
If $1580 sounds like a lot for a cheap home gym then I recommend doing one of two things:
1) Just purchase the stability ball and free weights. The ball and free weights are a must have. You can use the ball as the bench in most cases. This will not suffice for cardio, but it will give you the basic strength training tools for way less than anything else.
2) Compare the total savings of everything above to having a gym membership.
A gym membership is broken down into several parts. One is the membership fee or registration fee. The other is your monthly dues. The last part is optional.
Obviously paying $1580 for your very own inexpensive home gym is well worth it. You are already saving money comparing it to just one year at a gym! Imagine all the money you will save in 2-3 years!
The above equipment should be built to last. It should be built to withstand your fitness program. I am in no way bashing fitness centers or telling you to avoid them.
But I do want you to realize that a few simple tools like dumbbells, a stability ball, an adjustable bench, a heart rate monitor and a treadmill can save you mega bucks. Heck, even buying your very own home gym system is a best buy compared to gym memberships.
Your cheap home gym is within reach. Designing your own low cost home gym is one of the biggest motivators for working out. Of course you need the space, but almost everything mentioned above can be stored under your bed or in a closet. Even some treadmills fold up these days!
Buying your own cheap home gym saves you money and headaches. There are so many options and so many gadgets. The bottom line is to purchase from someone you trust and to purchase from a reputable source.
By building a cheap home gym you can start to develop healthy habits. You can work out on your own time. You can listen to your own music. You can really get into it.
Even though I have access to three large facility gyms (like I said I am a personal trainer) I choose to workout from home. And my workout uses the basic equipment that I recommend above.
Whether you choose to build your own inexpensive home gym today or tomorrow is your choice. Just keep this handy report for a reputable guide and cheap (but not poor quality!) products that I recommend.
